So if I spend a few hours measuring and confirming someone’s current stage of development then I might be able to be more effective at deciding whether I should tell them not to punch me because, “everyone else is not punching me and they don’t want to look bad”, instead of say, “don’t punch me because it’s wrong” or “don’t punch me because you will get in trouble if you do”.

That’s a pretty unhelpful model of reality.
