Act 2: Scene 3

My Infertility Journey

I waited 4 weeks for the insurance to approve my referral to the fertility clinic only to find out that it was the clinic’s fault it hadn’t been approved. Apparently, they claim to have no way of knowing when they get these referrals and I should have notified them.

Except that I did and they never returned my call. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age, they can’t implement a system to capture referrals.

My insurance was actually quite helpful. They made sure that they had all the facts before calling the clinic for me and assuring me someone would call me that day to help me get scheduled. True to their word, I had an appointment the following Monday.

My husband decided to accompany me on the consultation. They gave us all kinds of information about what the insurance will (IUI) and won’t (IVF) pay for … and that my husband had to be tested before the insurance would approve testing me. The doctor seemed to think we’d jump right to IVF. I mean, it doesn’t really matter if my tube works if my ovary is shot, right?

We’re still trying to get pregnant, though. Free is better than $2o,000.
