The smell of salt in the air, the spray of ocean water and the satisfaction of pulling a big catch from the waters of the Atlantic: A deep sea fishing trip could very well be the highlight of your Myrtle Beach vacation. To help you plan for a deep-sea fishing voyage on your next visit, we’ve listed a few charter options, as well as pulled together some tips for assuring you have a great day at sea.

Deep sea fishing trips can vary greatly from small chartered trips with just a handful of your friends and family on a customized trip far out to sea, to sport fishing, to near shore fishing trips and large “party boat” trips. The party boat trips, also known as “head boats,” take large groups out and often offer amenities like air-conditioned cabins and a fully stocked bar.

Pricing varies, depending on which options you choose. A spot on a large boat can be more affordable at about $25 for the trip (per person), but you may have to wait your turn to fish. A smaller, customized fishing trip can cost several hundred dollars, per person, for a private charter.

Questions to ask:

• What is provided in terms of fishing gear? If you’ll need a manual or motorized reel, there will likely be an additional rental charge. Also be sure to ask about bait.

• Will meals and drinks be provided? If not, is there room for a cooler?

• Is this trip appropriate for my experience level? If you’re inexperienced, you may want to pay more for a smaller tour staff who can help show you the ropes.

• Does the fee include any required fishing licenses?

• If you’re interested in drinking alcohol on the trip, ask what’s permitted. Some party cruises will sell drinks, others allow you to bring your own and some rule it out completely.

Tips to help you have a great time:

• Bring layers. It can be cool on the water even on sunny days.

• Don’t forget the sunscreen, sunglasses and hat. You can get sunburned even when it’s overcast!

• Think ahead about sea-sickness. Some of the seasickness medicines available are supposed to be taken the night before your trip.

• Get a good night’s sleep and make sure you’re hydrated for your trip. Being at sea can be draining, taking care of your body ahead of time will help assure a good day.
