We deserve better

There were just two men on the stage for the CNN-hosted U.S. Presidential debate last night and both were too old and too sick to be president. It was a dismaying performance.

On one side we watched Joe Biden struggling to speak coherently and forcefully and failing utterly to do so. He was said to have had a cold and a sore throat. But it was his age that made it impossible for him to rise above these small challenges.

On the other side we saw Donald Trump, a convicted felon chaos clown, boundlessly trumpeting his own greatness with hyperbole enough to make the devil blush. It was just business-as-usual for the ever-delusional, self-aggrandizing, ex-president.

I have felt for a long time that Joe Biden should not be running for another term. I had hoped he would have withdrawn from the race some time ago. Now it is more difficult. But it is not too late.

I am afraid far too many poorly informed voters listening to the debate last night heard only Biden’s raspy and hesitant voice and Trump’s strident bombast. They might have understood that Trump was telling one big lie after another, but I cannot say whether or not the lies were concerning to them. I’m afraid people are likely to be swayed more by style than substance. On that score, Trump clearly came out ahead.
