Are You Helping Yourself — By Helping Others?
The Dalai Lama once wrote that:
“A meaningful life isn’t about acquiring money and other facilities; it’s about dedicating your life to helping others as much as you can”.
When we dedicate our lives to helping others, when we give time to others (without expecting back from the person we gave to) we usually receive more than we ever gave.
Often we receive tenfold — in the most unexpected and extraordinary ways!
When we give to others, it helps us feel less isolated and less lonely. When we give to others, we develop a sense of being needed and appreciated.
This certainly does not mean making doormats of ourselves.
Rather it suggests as Mahatma Ghandi wrote, “That the best way of finding ourselves is in service to others”.
And usually the gifts we receive as a result, can help build our self esteem, our confidence and it can help us develop a sense of purpose.
Best still — we may find new friends and relationships as a result.
So what’s stopping you?
