Pro-Brexit MPs backing Theresa May, not their voters
Many Conservative and Labour MPs are refusing to represent their pro-Remain electorates on the issue of Brexit.
Instead, they back the “hard” Brexit planned by Theresa May, which involves leaving the European Union’s single market and customs union. May says this is “the will of the people”, and Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader of the opposition, agrees.
Some Labour MPs have defied Corbyn and backed a call by Labour MP Chuka Umunna for the UK to remain in the single market and customs union. This would allow the UK to trade with the rest of the EU as it does now, while retaining freedom of movement for EU citizens and possibly paying less to the EU, but losing its voting rights. Pro-Brexit MPs argue this would not deliver on the referendum.

However, most Labour MPs and all Conservative MPs (except Ken Clarke, MP for Rushcliffe) have backed Theresa May’s “hard” Brexit.
