Four Lessons from Losing a Journalism Job

Awesome, awesome story Melanie. I worked for 8 years in TV news and then left. I worked for a few years afterwards for a staffing company and then, ultimately, started a resume writing and career coaching company. We’ve grown like crazy in the last few years with offices in multiple cities throughout the United States. What you say in this article is totally true; especially Lessons #2 and #3. I had NOOOOO idea in the beginning just how valuable journalism writing skills are. Now, I tell people this all of the time. In fact, I hire a TON of former journalists (both broadcast and print) for precisely these reasons. Those writing skills are more valuable than you could possibly imagine! And, so many people don’t seem to realize that! Now, as a resume writer and career coach, I get to impact people’s lives on a daily basis. It’s incredibly rewarding to help people get new jobs. I feel like I’m making a much bigger difference in the world than I ever did in sports broadcasting. And, thanks for mentioning that Facebook support group. I’m going to check that out and see if there are some additional journalism folks that I can hire!
