Carol

I just wanted to take a moment and talk, in a very brief way about Carol. I loved the movie. It’s a beautiful movie from every point of view.

The performances from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are amazing. Subtlety, elegance, tenderness, passion, all of that contained in a single glance, in one touch on the shoulders.

Obviously, Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett are beautiful women. There is no denying that, but through the lens of Ed Lachman, they both gain an almost goddess proportions, joined with the direccion of Todd Hayes is something worth admiring.

Everything about Carol breaths elegance. From the costumes, to the cars to New York and to Blanchett and Mara, the flirting, the glances.

Most of all, I loved, I mean LOVED the cinematography in Carol. The amount of information conveyed just with camera placement is amazing.

Yes, the composition is beautiful, the lighting, the art direction, the actresses, everything is beautiful, but what Lachman and Hayes are capable of doing with the camera blew my mind.

I have this frame printed in my brain since I watched the movie this morning:

Cate Blanchett is sitting, with her daughter sitting in her lap. They are both in front of a double mirror while Carol combs her daughter’s hair. The mirror divides Carol in two. In one mirror you can see the mother and the daughter, facing front. In the other half, it’s just Carol facing slightly to the back. Just in that frame there’s everything you need to know about Carol. A broken woman, divided by these two sides, the mother and the woman.

I would love to make a more in depth analysis of the film, but I have to watch it a couple of times before that. There are many images like this with so much beautiful visual and cinematic storytelling. The use of mirrors, the constant division of the frame, the voyeuristic camera, mirroring (yes, duality again) Therese and her passion for photography.

I just needed to express how much I liked the movie and I will make that in depth analysis. If you haven’t, go see it.
