Professions are changing. I know you’ve heard it, but if you have questions about it, know Daniel Susskind’s work (The Future of the Professions: How Technology Will Transform the Work of Human Experts. Oxford University Press, 2015). Why is there so much talk about artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, and blockchain? What is Learning analytics and adaptive learning? What are active teaching and learning methods? Why is there such prominence in these respective areas of knowledge?

Some important skills for this century

It is likely that what you will read in the next few lines does not seem of immediate…

In one of the legendary scenes of a legendary movie (2001: A Space Odyssey, directed by Stanley Kubrick, 1968), the supposedly infallible HAL 9000 onboard computer attempts to get astronaut Dave Bowman to give up his intent: to turn it off. The crew decided this when HAL made a mistake and thus lost the mission’s credibility. The dialogue is:

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I’ve still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help…

My first contribution to Medium

René Descartes. Source: Wikimedia Commons, https://commons.wikimedia.org

Just the other day I wrote a comment for a Medium article (which defended the idea that all of us must write, no matter the subject nor the professional level of the authorship). My words were: “Nice article. I was thinking of becoming an author, now I have decided to be one!”. Many applauses came just after :)

Welcome to the text I intended to write. Perhaps the first of a series. I hope. Over the past 30 years, I have thought and worked on subjects like technology, education, agricultural engineering, computer science. A considerable mix of knowledge areas and…
