The 94541 area code takes up a Majority of the city of Hayward Calif., located in the San Francisco Bay Area. With a population of roughly 66 thousand, this city is vibrant and full of life. With a large Hispanic community, making up 44% of the citizens of Hayward.

The city of Hayward and the 94541 area code, is also home to a 31% foreign born community. Within that percentage of immigrant residents, over half of them come from Latin America, 37% from Asia, and the rest from Europe and Africa.

With such a high amount of our residents coming from Latin America, there is a big Hispanic influence on the culture of Hayward. Personally, my favorite part of Hayward is its rich Hispanic history and culture.

In the area code of 94541, there is a high percentage of high school graduates. However, there is a significant drop when looking at the percentage of the population that has earned a Bachelor’s degree or higher. It is interesting to see such a low rate of college degrees within the community, when we are home to one of the many California State Universities. Located within the Hayward hills, sits California State University East Bay, a school that greatly favors Hayward students within their acceptances each year.

Attending a University is a huge financial burden for most individuals within the community. Something that not everyone can afford. Within the 94541 area code, about 11% of the population is below the poverty line. When looking at the average income per capita for the city of Hayward, one can see that the average resident of the city makes about $35,000 per year. Lower than that of neighboring cities. The average income per household in Hayward is about $82,000 per year. Slightly higher than the average income of California, but still lower than neighboring cities.

With this information, it is clear that Hayward and the area code of 94541 is not, on average, home to individuals with ample wealth. Although I cannot know for sure, I have a feeling that these income levels contribute to the low rate of College attendance within the community.

As someone who grew up in this community, I can say that this data pretty accurately represents the city and the residents that make up Hayward. It is an incredibly diverse community with a lot of influence from Latin American cultures. Although there is a low percentage of college graduates and an average income that is on the lower side, the city has so much love, culture, and pride. Pride that I definitely feel every day.
