With my children grown up and a yearning for more fulfilment in life, I chose to redefine my golden years by immersing myself in the dynamic lifestyle of a digital nomad. In a world where the traditional notion of retirement is being reshaped, a new breed of adventurers is emerging — the digital nomads over 50. No longer confined to the rocking chair or the hammock, these individuals, single or married, are redefining their golden years by combining travel, exploration, and earning money online. In this article, we’ll delve into the inspiring journey of a 50 plus-digital nomad (that’s me 😊) who has lived in Cyprus, Costa Rica, and is now eagerly preparing for the next destination. Chapter 1: Embracing Change and Rediscovering Life as a Digital Nomad
Embark on a chapter of my life where I traded the familiar for the unknown, leaving behind the comforts of home and the securities that anchored me.
Two weeks before my departure to Cyprus, a twist of fate unfolded — my fiancé decided not to join me on this transformative journey. Armed with nothing but a limited budget, I faced the challenge of navigating this new chapter solo (with my two Yorkies). Broken but resolute, I embraced the opportunity to redefine my golden years, seizing the chance to live my dream and goal.
As I sold my properties and all my belongings in South Africa, the option to stay became obsolete. With determination outweighing the fear and a dream propelling me forward, I packed my bags and ventured into the uncertainty alone.
Before departing South Africa, thankfully we had acquired a little apartment in Cyprus so upon arrival, I felt secure knowing I had a base to get myself settled in. It also ensured a source of peace and security. As the door to one chapter closed, the acquisition of this property became the key to unlocking a new chapter, inviting me to settle into a different country and culture, and rediscover life through the lens of digital nomadism.
Chapter 2: The Rollercoaster Ride of the Unforeseen
Having over 20 years Real Estate, Marketing and Sales experience, I managed to secure a position as an International Marketing Manager for a top Real Estate Agency, a role that seemed promising until the unforeseen arrival of Covid. The global pandemic turned everything upside down, and my financial stability started dwindling. To survive, I had to make tough decisions, including selling my apartment that once symbolised security.
Now what?
I remembered registering for a course on Udemy — “How to create a course and sell it” — and so my digital marketing journey emerged. It was exciting and liberating. My creativity started to ignite once again and I was now on my new journey. Amy Porterfield became my next mentor (highly recommend finding a mentor to get started as it can be very intimidating in the wide world of successful influencers). Then…. Impostor syndrome kicked in just as I was about to launch! I am a dynamic entrepreneur and could not understand what was happening to me. I was afraid to get myself out there, so I decided to do it one step at a time and soon discovered this was a normal digital entrepreneur journey for many — so never give up.
Chapter 3: Embracing the Magic of Online Digital and Affiliate Marketing
So my new passion was born. I turned to the magic of online digital and affiliate marketing, a game-changer that I wish I had discovered a decade ago. It became the lifeline I needed, not only to sustain myself but to thrive in the digital landscape. The challenges became opportunities for reinvention, and I discovered the future of business in the digital realm. I discovered that I was creative, and with tools such as Canva, Ai and YouTube the world was now my oyster.
Chapter 4 : Age has no limits to living a full life / balancing your life
Living in Cyprus brought forth a chapter of exhilarating achievements and fun facts that added vibrant hues to my digital nomadic journey. Age proved to be nothing more than a number, showcasing the incredible feats one can accomplish with determination and a commitment to staying fit and healthy. It is also a way to create new friends and build a support network.
First on the list of fun facts is my triumph as a Dragon Boat National Champion. I paddled my way to victory with an amazing, fun team, proving that dedication and a competitive spirit know no age limit.
Amid the challenges of the global pandemic, I found solace and adventure on the cycling trails. Breaking records during COVID became a testament to resilience and a celebration of pushing personal boundaries. Cycling became a melody of triumph as I soared through the open roads (with no cars), defying the constraints of lockdowns.
But the journey didn’t stop there. In the spirit of pushing limits, I laced up my running shoes and conquered my first 21 kilometres. Age, once again, proved to be a mere bystander as I pounded the pavement with determination, proving that a new personal best is always within reach, regardless of the number on your birthday cake.
These fun facts from my time in Cyprus echo the ethos that life is an adventure to be lived, challenges to be embraced, and personal goals to be conquered, no matter the stage of life.
The digital nomadic lifestyle became the backdrop for these remarkable feats, reminding me that the journey is as exciting as the destination.
Chapter 5: The Lessons Learned and the Power of Adaptability
In the face of adversity, I learned the importance of adaptability. The road was not always smooth, but every twist and turn taught me resilience. Selling the property in Cyprus wasn’t a setback; it was a strategic move that allowed me to embrace the evolving world of online business. The COVID restrictions in Cyprus forced me to move to Costa Rica, where they were less enforced, giving me the freedom I desired. My online business was starting to take off.
Chapter 6: Anticipating the Next Chapter with Wisdom
As I celebrate my 60th birthday, I stand tall, having conquered challenges that once seemed impossible. The road ahead is paved with newfound wisdom, the knowledge that age is no barrier to learning, and the belief that the future holds endless opportunities. Ready to join me?

I am fortunate to be a vibrant individual with a zest for life that refuses to wane. I must admit that some of the challenges really pushed me to my limits, but I could never give up my dream. There was a stage where I found myself nearly broke, I had to make some changes, but time was running out, and I refused to give up and pushed through with delight.
I chose not to settle into the mundane routine but to embark on an exciting journey as a digital nomad. With my laptop as my compass and the world as my playground, I found the perfect blend of exploration and earning.
