Microsoft has purchased Synthetic DNA for Digital Data Storage Research

Today, more than 2.5 exabytes (or 2.5 billion gigabytes) of data are generated every day- an already-high number that’s expected to continue growing at a significant rate, with mobile devices responsible for much of this data. Some experts have hypothesized that 90% of all the world’s data today was produced within the last two years
Storing all this data is becoming an issue.

DNA data storage can be a solution and it’s not a recent idea. The idea and the general considerations about the possibility of recording, storage and retrieval of information on DNA molecules were originally made by Mikhail Neiman and published in 1964–65 in the Radiotekhnika journal, USSR, and the technology may therefore be referred to as MNeimONics, while the storage device may be known as MNeimON (Mikhail Neiman OligoNucleotides), According to Wikipedia.

April 27, 2016, Twist Bioscience, a company accelerating science and innovation through rapid, high-quality DNA synthesis, announced Microsoft Corp. has agreed to purchase ten million long oligonucleotides from Twist Bioscience to encode digital data.

DNA is a promising storage media, as it has a known shelf life of several thousand years, offers a permanent storage format and can be read for continuously decreasing costs,” commented Emily M. Leproust, Ph.D., CEO of Twist Bioscience.

DNA data storage could last up to 2,000 years without deterioration according to a recent presentation at the American Chemical Society. In addition,a single gram of DNA can store almost a one trillion gigabytes (almost a zettabyte) of digital data.

Synthetic DNA is maybe a solution to store the huge amount of data worldwide users consume each years but it’s not for now because of the cost.
