Types of Mold That Are White

While there is no such thing as a species of mold called “white mold” there are many species of mold that are white in appearance. Some of these species include: spergillus, cladosporium, and penicillum.

Where is Mold Usually Found?

Just like any other type of mold, white mold grows where it has a moisture and food source available. That being said, white mold on bathroom walls is often discovered because of the moisture in bathrooms.

White Mold on Cloths

If your clothing is wet for extended periods of time, it can lead to major mold issues. While it may be tempting to clean and salvage this clothing we recommend taking the safe way out by disposing of the clothing. Keeping mold infested clothing in your property can cause the spread of the mold to other parts of your property and health issues.

White Mold on Food

Food is another common place for mold to grow. If you notice any mold growth on your food, avoid eating it at all costs. Many types of mold are toxic and can cause you health problems if consumed.

White Mold vs Efflorescence

Because mold that appears white and efflorescence look very similar and grow on the same materials, people often get them confused with each other. If you want to check to see which one is in your property you can give it a light spray of water. Chances are if the water falls off, it is efflorescence.

In any case, both mold and efflorescence are indications that there is moisture in your property so if you have either of them, we recommend calling (855) 460–0914 for a free mold remediation quote.

White Mold vs Black Mold

As we mentioned in the introduction, white mold is usually not quite as toxic as the common type of black mold which is also called Stachybotrys. The primary toxicity difference between the two colors of mold is that black mold usually produces more mycotoxins. This means that it is usually more harmful to your health.

Testing for Mold

Finding mold in your property isn’t as easy as you may think. It is often hidden behind walls for example, and it is not discovered until the walls are removed. That is why we advise people to use moisture meters and/or check for signs of moisture damage in your building. Remember that mold requires a source of moisture to live, so water damage is an indicator that there could be mold. You can also use an air sampling test kit to check for mold. While air testing kits are not always perfect in their reedings, they can give you a good idea.

Mold Prevention

Preventing any type of mold is basically the same. The main thing you need to do is avoid extended periods of water damage because as we discussed before moisture is required for mold to grow. You can check the moisture in your property by using a moisture meter.

Other ways to prevent mold is by getting your property waterproofed, drying any leaks within 24–48 hours, using a HEPA filter to catch mold spores in the air, and using a humidifier to keep the relative humidity under 60%.
