Actual libertarians don’t want to “leave things to the states”. Actual libertarians want to eliminate state as well as federal governments, or reduce them to the point where the only service they perform is enforcing contracts between free and uncoerced individuals. There are a lot of people, like Johnson, who claim to be libertarians but are in fact no such thing.

Libertarianism is a propertarian variant of anarchism (it could be called “right anarchism” without being too incorrect), not some kind of new label for constitutional conservatism.
