Wow, I feel the same way reading the comments. I wish I could put together something so intellectually clear to contribute to the community but, I’m just not that girl. Your piece is beautiful and fluid and was a delight to read. Although I do not share the same view I appreciated and enjoyed reading your stance.
I am however compelled to contribute in my own way and to me, yes that is all that matters. This show and Atlanta both speak to my heart as these are the people that I interact with every single day. Where Queen Sugar for me is just visually stunning and nothing more. I am not able to connect with anyone other than Ralph Angel and the Aunt. The same goes for Green Leaf. I enjoy watching us in positions I can only (at this moment) dream to be in. I enjoy having the options. Something to tell my children to watch when it’s age appropriate so that they can see themselves in the real world outside of their immediate influencers. And yes Soulfood will definitely be on that list of required watching!
We all just aren’t that deep, and that doesn’t make us less “woke” but some of us may feel we have enough deep painful traumas in our lives that we just want to kick back and laugh with the culture when we are being entertained as adults. Queen sugar is just on another level and it’s great that we have levels and aren’t just seen as a people that only has one layer. The only way to secure that is to participate in any way possible. From actually tuning in to hashtags and blog posts.
