Assumptions, beliefs and meaning. Words have a universal definition, yet they come with very personal and specific meaning. The meaning of a word is shaped by our experience with it. Our belief of what it means to us.
Me and the word or idea of the word habit never got along. I always felt and thought it meant restrictive, orderly, regimented, inflexible and bland. To me it was the opposite of what I craved, freedom, which is why I resisted the idea of habits for so long. I felt like with habits I had no choice. That was until I read Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin and the meaning of habits shifted for me. I realized that habits can mean more freedom, variety, flexibility and fun. It’s all about what habits you choose and how you perceive them. They’re either sucking the life and time out of you or helping you do the things you enjoy and creating more freedom.
We each have our own dictionary, but thankfully it wasn’t chiseled out of stone. We can change the meanings, shift our perspectives and write new definitions.
