I got this far before I quit reading, “ Yes, there’s literally no difference between President George Washington, a man who helped found this nation, and Robert E. Lee, a man who led a hate-fueled rebellion aimed at destroying it.”

This sentience shows the authors ignorance of our history. In the times after ratifying the Constitution and the out break of the Civil War there was no The United States of America, there was These United States of America with each state considered an independent nation into itself which had freely joined into a federation with the other States in America.

Lee, like many other men of his time, believed that he held a higher allegiance to his state than he owed to the Union. That is why he turned down Lincoln’s offer to be the commander of the Union Army for a lesser passion in the Confederates’ Army, the command of the Army of Northern Virginia. A position he held until the end of the war.

The war was not fought over slaver, it was fought over the right to leave the Union, the South lost that fight, and the United States of America was changed, for better or worse, forever.
