Why I Left the Right: How Studying Religion Made Me a Liberal
Susie Meister

Conservative: holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion.

Liberal: open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.

“whose rhetoric is most in line with their philosophy”

I am pulling this (text from your story) out of context, however, it is valid in that is doesn’t need context to have value. Your understanding of religion aligns you with liberal “rhetoric”. It does not mean that everyone with an understanding of religion (lesser or greater than yours) is misaligned, should they be conservative. Few people hold a monopoly on religious understanding.
