Research suggests that in order for the sector to adopt a science-based approach to meeting the 1.5-degree goal of the Paris Agreement, it will need to achieve absolute reductions in emissions (compared to 2020) of 21% by 2025, and 42% by 2030¹. No sector decarbonization plan to achieve this has as yet been adopted by the industry (let alone th…

Tech for Good — does the narrative still hold true in 2023?

This "percent" narrative is part of the problem.

This "percent" narrative is part of the problem. I'm working on a piece about this, but in the meantime, just ask, "90 % of what?" as in - if you do everything on the demand side, all the efficiency, all the lifestyle change, all the electrification, how much energy will you need to run the sector - and therefore, how many new zero carbon powerplants will you need to run it (be they solar panels, wind turbines, nuclear reactors, wave tech). The "First Gigawatt Down" challenge. This one crazy metric. It's an illuminating exercise. More than an exercise - it's pretty much essential if you want to be climate solution literate in any way. We've done the breakdown for states, but have yet to do this for each industrial sector. Here's a video on the states: https://youtu.be/8--VSh0JUT0 #FirstGigawattDown

What Happens When It Gets Too Hard to Make Money Online?

Ah, yes! And what comes after "peak 'make money online'"?

Ah, yes! And what comes after "peak 'make money online'"? After peak "growth for growth's sake"? Maybe time to shift from the phony economy - https://harpers.org/archive/2008/06/our-phony-economy/ we are all in thrall of. The one with built in obsolescence where we're always chasing another sale and trying to monetize everything just to survive. And on to a genuine economy of problem solving as needed. #RenegotiateTheEconomy #BasicIncome # all kinds of things to explore. Here's some food for thought for the negotiation: https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/05/16/basic-income-not-basic-jobs-against-hijacking-utopia/ And here's another great essay from back in 2013 on the situation that is apparently more widely felt today: https://archive.nytimes.com/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/25/the-end-of-quiet-music/ It's time to organize already. The fault is in our economy as currently designed, and all its misincentives.

Ah, the music industry in the days of technology & social media. If you took away the money problem (via basic income & other reforms) - how would this change? At present, Industry has few big money earners and a long tail of less financially viable acts and many more…

We aimed to put our world leaders in the spotlight, and urge them to ignore the false solutions and greenwashing which would be put forward by big corporations at COP26. Instead, we wanted to amplify the voices of those already feeling the…

On a related note, we are urging people to pay close attention to all solutions and talk candidly and clearly about every option to see what each community can rally around. And in addition to greenWASHing, you need to look out for greenWISHing - really think through those solutions all the way to zero carbon and beyond. To help with that, check out our #FirstGigawattDown metric. And join the First Gigawatt Down Campaign!

Lifestyle Tension: Young people in the U.S. are significantly more likely to say that “what is good for me is often not good for the environment” (57% under 30, 43% over 30) and nearly two times as many youth strongly agree vs over 30 (26% to 14…

Young people are also suffering from a block in the older environmentalists worldview. Older environmentalists tend to dismiss a lot of viable solutions and demonize them. Nuclear energy comes to mind as a prime example. It may be that young people need to push back on some of the limitations…

The concept of "backfiring" - "having the opposite effect to what was intended" would have value in ordinary circumstances but makes no sense in this context. Right now, we face the threat of climate change, which means the goal is rapid decarbonization and full transformation of everything at scale. Most…

Great post!

Great post! I like the "Upstream-Downstream" distinction. I've also heard this called the Preventable Problem Paradox https://medium.com/@shreyashere/why-our-leaders-fail-us-and-then-save-us-the-preventable-problem-paradox-872614ec3293 , illustrated with a Superman clip.

Coronavirus Death Toll PSA

Stay HOME & Reconfigure the Economy. — There are a lot of people clamoring to “reopen America” and “let the virus go everywhere and be done with it.” This is based on economic fears, that a broken economy will result in more death and illness than the pandemic. Good news: Our beloved, mostly phony economy is way…

Make #BedCzar Trend. We need a #BedCzar more than ever. — Update, July 17, 2020 — Looking back on this post I wrote back in the early days of Covid. Good for all of us, professionals took over.
