The Metropolitan Museum’s New Logo

Okay typographers, put on your maven shoes. And oh boy is this one going to keep some of my obsessive compulsive letterer friends agitated for days, maybe weeks. Maybe forever.

After 45 years, an icon has changed its icon and one article is already calling it a “typographic bus-crash”.

The last time the Metropolitan Museum changed its logo was in 1971, with this:

Let the games begin. Here’s the first pronouncement about it that I’ve seen online:

UPDATE: The Met officially rolled out it’s new logo yesterday, Feb 19, and one thing is perfectly clear: The Metropolitan Museum Of Art is now asking to be called by it’s diminutive, “The Met”. (A word on this: Growing up as a New Yorker, I always thought the Metropolitan Opera had the “Met” nickname sewed up. If you said, “We went to the Met Friday night”, you were at the opera house. If you wanted to say you went to the Metropolitan Museum, you had to put it into context, “We went to see the Rothko exhibit at the Met”. But you know, screw ’em. I can’t stand opera - and believe me, I’ve tried - so the museum can have “The Met” as far as I’m concerned.)

Wired did a piece on the new logo, by Margaret Rhodes, which is quite comprehensive and brings up a lot of important points to consider when judging a new graphic identity. Highly recommended.

At the end of the article, Rhodes nails it and reminds us what’s really important:

“…go to The Met. Go to The Met at the Cloisters, and go to The Met Breuer. Go to The Met online. And then do it all again in a year, and then again in two or three or five years. Perhaps by then you’ll know: Are you delighted, or disappointed, or something else entirely?”
