The conversation is a public one and long-running, so new people are entering into it constantly. For each new person the conversation has to be repeated. Not just for them, but for others out there listening. Douglas did not have a valid viewpoint, but that didn’t stop Lincoln. I doubt very much if Lincoln thought he could change Douglas’s mind. The debate was for those listening, so they could be convinced.
People ARE being “legally muzzled” through court cases, laws, and school regulations. All in the name of diversity. In addition, if someone does suggest an alternative viewpoint, then they or the company they work for gets pressured to shut him down, which was the post was all about. The entire diversity movement ends up looking like a bunch of petty tyrants.
If you don’t want to listen to the man, then don’t listen. If you don’t want to have a conversation with him, then don’t have a conversation. But don’t muzzle him either. He’s has just as much right to speak as anyone else, regardless his viewpoint or validity of his argument.
