Walk the Walk

Why fresh starts are the way to go for a better and exciting life.

New beginnings. They sound magical and hopeful. We tell ourselves that tomorrow is a brand new day, that from now onward I will do things in a different way. That I will be different, I will be more. It sounds a lot easier in our head than it is in reality. It takes hard work. Every minute of every day, you have to choose that fresh start.

Is it worth it? Absolutely.

Life is unfair. It is harder for some people; some seem to coast through it, while for others it’s a struggle every day. The truth, however, is that we ALL have our own problems. At the end of the day though, we all have one single goal. To lead healthy, exciting and joyful lives. To just live!

We crave for the new when we start to feel that there is no reason to continue, that the current path is going nowhere. When that happens, pause, take a breath and ask yourself why you are on this path in the first place. What is your end goal? Is there something you can change or take another way to get to the same place? Do you need to start over and follow a different path? Keep the goal in mind. If there is a road block, your goal will lead you to different ones. Goals and paths both matter. You cannot have one without the other.

Giving up something you have known for a long time takes a lot out of you, whether it is your career, your relationships, your apartment, or moving to a whole new country. It is a different landscape, with its own rules, and you have to figure them out, again. That is the reason why it is so hard to let go. There are no guarantees. You can never be completely sure that it is the right decision for you or whether it will pay off. Yet, we begin anew many times through our lives, sometimes we choose to, others we are forced to.

It is scarier when we choose to leave behind the known for the unknown. Because there is no body else to blame if things go sideways. We change along with our dreams. Our priorities change. Jobs don’t work out, relationships don’t work out. It is always better to drop off the ledge and learn to fly, even after some bone-jarring falls, than to stick with something when you know it’s not right for you. Because no matter how much you try, it never will be.

A fresh start is a great way of renewing yourself and your life, to sweep away the cobwebs, and replacing the stale and old perspectives with something new and refreshing. Life changes constantly. So do we. It is not cowardice to let go of something you don’t want any more so that you can move forward to a better future. It will be hard work and will need constant vigilance. You can ensure there are no back slides by keeping your focus on the new and exciting opportunities in your future.

Having said that, not all new beginnings need a complete overhaul. If you want to continue with your work but are bored with doing the same things over and over, explore something new in your field. Learn some new skills and apply for jobs that will use them. If you love your partner but your relationship is lackluster, make some time for a vacation, or go on date nights. Try new things together.

The goal of new beginnings is to bring back the joy and excitement we lost. To do whatever feels right to. To be a little selfish. If you are generous with yourself, you will be generous with others. Charity does not only begin at home, it begins with you.

We can never have a ‘brand new’ start, only babies are that lucky. The rest of us have to start fresh with whatever we have, after all we can only be ourselves.

A single golf clap? Or a long standing ovation?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
