Background: as an interfaith minister I write and send out a Friday Blessing to my list every week. This was the blessing for this week (5/6/16):

— — — — —

I sat with this week’s blessing and I wasn’t sure what to do. I needed to talk about the political landscape and yet, I had nothing I could even say that was at all “spiritual” or “enlightened” or even remotely reverential. My guides tried to convince me to write a blessing of Donald Trump and I had even dragged myself through writing three quarters of that document before highlighting it and deleting it the next morning. I couldn’t do it, I just couldn’t. Not today, maybe next time.

So today, I am going to bless other things. I am going to maybe be a little less “new-agey enlightened” (which honestly, I am pretty much calling bullshit on anyway) and I’m going to call it like I see it because this is what I feel needs to be said (Disclaimer: if you are sensitive to swearing, it is time to close your browser):

Today I bless those of you who aren’t total assholes.

I am grateful that I can find people who are standing in solidarity with me in our complete and total abject horror at whatever the hell is going on out there in the political arena right now.

Today I bless people who know that there is a huge inequality problem in our nation and who aren’t pretending it isn’t there.

I bless the black people of America who are bravely standing up in the face of ACTUAL RISK OF DEATH and are saying that This Is Not Okay Anymore, that there is a huge problem and that this country owes it to them to be accountable for this problem because black Americans ARE AMERICANS AND DESERVE EQUAL AMERICAN RIGHTS!

I bless white people who can fucking own that they are making the world worse even unconsciously and accidentally and who can try to see these places where they are perpetuating racial biases and problems and to educate themselves on how to become an ally.

I bless people of all marginalized races and ethnicities in our country because it is hard as hell to be anything but a straight white man and that deserves to be acknowledged, understood and validated for everyone who does not fit that specific criteria. Our country is not a safe place for most people who are not white and that is some bigtime bullshit. I bless you and not in a condescending white lady way but because I am trying to do one small thing that I can do by using my belief in the power of positive energy to both acknowledge how fucked up this all is, take ownership of my own part, apologize for it and say I will NOT ever consciously perpetuate any of this madness. My blessing is not out of pity, it is to add to the positive energy bubble surrounding the change that needs to happen in the landscape of our political arena.

I bless gay and bisexual people for being brave, for standing up and for demanding equality. It takes some big bravery to do this and I send blessings your way for that bravery. (and Lord knows that sexuality is fluid and 80% of the populations falls on a continuum between Gay and Straight so THIS REALLY APPLIES TO ALL OF US LET US BE CLEAR ABOUT THAT).

I bless the transgender community for coming forward and thereby helping teach society that binary gender constructs are SUCH bullshit and that whatever anatomy you have between your legs has LITERALLY NOTHING TO DO WITH who you are as a person.

I bless the few republicans who are standing up and saying they will NOT support an insane person as leader of their party. It takes such balls to do that; to go against the grain, to speak up and to rally against your own party when it is in the wrong. This is admirable. This is required. This deserves a blessing.

Conservatism at its core isn’t “evil” or “bad” or even wrong…but conservatism isn’t what is being represented right now by the GOP. Conservatism is barely even a blip on the radar right now. The true republican ideals are basically out the window in the political conversation we are currently having in our country. Instead what has risen to the forefront is hate, bigotry, hostility, violence, homophobia, sexism, xenophobia and a general sort of terribleness that has no place being seriously considered for office.

What’s happening right now is unacceptable and it seems to be sort of a test of the times to see who is willing to stand up and say as much and who is willing to fall into the ether of outdated, immoral, violent suppression of the past. Who has grown and who has not? This is becoming clear.

So today I bless the people who are calling it out.

I bless the people who are willing to speak for progress rather than hate.

I bless the people who are brave enough to stand up for what is right, what is just, what is good and what needs to change.

I bless the people who are open minded, who have open hearts, who know that they don’t know it all but are damn sure clear as hell that what’s being proposed is not okay. I bless those of us who are striving to be better, to learn more, to change our perspectives and to embrace the evolution of humanity and society because we are not arrogant enough to think that we’ve ever come close to doing it even good enough yet.

I bless those of you who aren’t assholes.

You don’t have to be perfect (lord knows I’m not), you just have to be willing. Today my blessing goes out to those of you who are willing because that’s what we need in the face of so much close-minded hatred. A little willingness goes so, so far.

Today I bless the willing. I bless the open. I bless the people standing up for what is right regardless of bullshit labels like party affiliation. I bless those of you who are unable to allow this fuckery to continue for a moment longer. I bless you and I pray that we can somehow stop this trainwreck.

Blessed be and good luck. You can make a difference, please start doing it.
