I’ve come across plenty of people on OK Cupid and other dating sites who mention in their profile that they’re a bit shy and wouldn’t send a first message, so kind of use visitor notifications on OK Cupid as a way of saying: “Hello. I’m interested.” So, I won’t know about those people being interested in me anymore. I’d imagine most users of the site are using the free version. This decision removes a function that us free users previously enjoyed. All this talk of beta testing just sounds like nonsense to me. I’m assuming that visitor notifications will now simply become one of the perks of being an A-List member. One of the real selling points of OK Cupid has always been that it has a massive user base, a pretty decent matching system and allowed users of the free version to enjoy features that were only available to paying members on many other sites. It seems Ok Cupid is removing this feature to try to drive as many people as possible to opt for an A-List membership. That’s fine, but be honest about it rather the dressing it up as the result of some beta test feedback. After all, as the site features third party advertising, it can still generate revenue from advertising due to the number of visitors/members of the site.
