Diary of a Madman (Title stolen from Ozzy Osbourne)

Prologue: The concept for this diary was stolen from Tyler Reed — a fellow hacker and ideas-maestro (kissing arse :-)- ‘s weekly Quick Update posts (http://tylerreed.com/). Thank you Tyler, for unknowingly allowing me to steal your concept!

(The idea of stealing concepts was inspired by Austin Kleon: http://austinkleon.com/steal/)

Week 18–22 January 2016

Note: I will be summarizing my updates in themes and not days of the week.

Health

Health wise I have been slacking this week. My personal theme for this year is to eat “from the earth” and to “eat when required” — just enough. This week food was few, water was less but the Mocha, Cappuccino and Americano — anything made from a coffee bean — was in abundance. Also, due to my working hours and pressures, my “hot” desk — anyone providing an on-site service for clients seem to have a moving seat — at a big client was my “home away from home” — meaning no running, no walking, no kettlebell (Fitbit ranking’s down!)

Music

My choice of music this week was Marilyn Manson. 24/7.

And Taylor Swift. Don’t judge me……..

Family

Who?

O, those 3 kids and the wife……didn’t see them much.

Work

As you could gather, work this week was rough. What a way to start the year! Being busy is not bad. Being productive is better, but most of my week was about fighting bad decisions, personal egos and the lack of proper design — issues raised with the client at project kick-off (or handover rather).

Fires, fires, fires!!!!!!!

This week made me realised why I branched off and started my own thing. This year I need to focus more on implementing the values that for me will make software development a better practice for all hackers — (normal working hours is one of them).

I also realised that keeping a client because they pay well and often might not always be a good enough reason to keep them on the books. Sometimes — for sanity — it is OK to fire a client.
