If you have ever wondered how the developers’ world has changed in the past years, both for what concern its community background and the mostly used programming languages, here there are some insights from the Stack Overflow survey.

  1. What is the background of people approaching the IT world?

Concerning country of origin, in the past 10 years, it seems that India has steadily grew to become one of the most active country for what concerns IT developing, moving from 7th place to steadily be 2nd behind the champion USA in 2017.

Top 10 respondent percentages by country from 2011 to 2021.
Proportion in respondent genders between females, males and other genders/non-conforming from 2017 to 2021.

In terms of gender, however, the programming world appears still male dominant. As we can see, across the last 5 years we have a huge disproportion between the respondents to the survey. Something to think about in terms of how further include females and other gender categories into this field.

3. What is the most used language?

Despite an increasing diversity in the range of programming languages used from developers, It seems that C and Java are unquestionably still at the top! Python, however, might be on the rise, let’s see how it will go in the future!

Top 10 respondent percentages by programming language used from 2011 to 2021.

To wrap it up, things are definitively changing in the developers’ world, which is reasonable given such an active and globalised environment. However, some other things seem to be static. One of these, the gender inequality, should probably raise concern and awareness.
