Get Out Of The Desert
Finding your own personal paradise has benefits that are obvious, and not so obvious. The late comedian Sam Kinison says it best in one of his jokes on stage.
Kinison goes on to say, and I’m paraphrasing it, that “if you’re hungry, get out of the desert!” Don’t take his plan to solve world hunger literally, but his classic approach to it has some validity to it.
I know I quote comedians often, but they tend to spill undeniable truths during their bits. It’s cliché to say, but why do you think Jon Stewart was such a trusted news source?
Kinison’s joke could apply to our decision on where to settle- if we ever do. Our circumstances have a direct connection to where we live, and ultimately what place we decide to call home.
- Is this a place with the type of people I want to be associated with?
- Is it safe?
- Is it fulfilling?
These are questions worth asking when you look for your ideal place. If you want something, and you’re not getting it where you are- go.
You have to go somewhere else.
Look for it, because it’s out there.
You want to hangout with really like minded people? You’re day dreaming of waterboarding while being towed by a yacht?
Your spot might just be a rural city with your favorite country bar. Whatever it is, you have to go there.
I know I haven’t done this in the past many times. The hardship that ensues is unbearable, until a correction is made.
Sure, making millions of dollars would help transcend barriers, like ensuring you’re on that yacht you desire. Yet, at the end of the day it comes down to you finding your optimal location.
Strive for what you want, and make it happen soon. Chances are if you’re doing the same thing every day at the same place — it’s not going to happen.
At least that’s what I currently believe makes sense. However, I’m sure someone could argue that I’m wrong.
I don’t know.
In the end, being around nothing (or everything you don’t want) isn’t close to being fulfilling. I believe I’ll get myself out of a surrounding that is just engulfed in misery if that ends up being the case.
If you’re in that position- it’s time to get out of the desert.
