OK, I am going to be THAT guy, I guess, that refuses to completely agree to a popular article. So be it, I am autistic, lol.
I do agree that we need to have EVERYONE covered under some kind of health care plan, but I want it to be a system that allows for a full range of choices, private as well as public, catastrophic only vrs full coverage, and so forth. I also agree that a system where American families go bankrupt simply trying to cover the cost of medical care is a flawed system as well. We need to fix this.
But I dont like using the Medicate system, which is set up for the elderly and not the general public. MedicAID would be a better approach as it is set up for all ages, all kinds of families, etc. We simply need to convert it into a government public option insurance program. Let people buy into it if they want, and if they cant they can have it at a pro-rated cost based on their income level. It would be free at 130% of the poverty legvel, as it is now, but ratchet up on a sliding scale best set by law makers looking to make it work for AMERICA’s people primarily and industry secondarily.
Also, I think the ACA is worth saving. Just change the model from state level insurance pools that states have to set up and manage and pay into, and convert it to a national level insurance pool where people can buy policies from ANY state and have real competition for health care plans. The base premiums for the Medicaid plans would be based on an 80% cost of the average health care plans that offer comparable options and coverage.
This would allow for Universal care for everyone, allow for choice for private insurance, and maintain a system of competition that would encourage efficiency, innovation and a creative element that has been the hallmark of American business for centuries.
I want to applaud Senator Warren for having the courage to publish such a specific plan for all to see and evaluate. That takes courage, no doubt, in our increasingly hostile partisan public forums today. Well done, Senator!
