The Republicans lost on this issue when they decided that not only must Obamacare be repealed, it must be replaced (with something that is cheaper and better). By signing on for replacement, the Republicans conceded the federal government must provide healthcare for everyone and, thereby, they conceded that healthcare is a right, or, to use the word they hate, an entitlement. So now the question is not one of ends, but of means to an end. The ideological battle the Republicans waged is lost, permanently lost, only to be replaced by a technical argument about how best to achieve the end of healthcare entitlement. That’s where the debate is and there are no obvious solutions to making Obamacare cheaper and better. But it will be fun watching the Republicans squirm as they try to square the circle.
