Robert Garcia: We don’t want to hear excuses after the fight
In less than one week former four-division world champion Adrien Broner will square off with current lightweight champion Mikey Garcia. The prize fight will take place July 29 at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Boxing has experienced a year of great fights and this fight definitely has fight of the year potential. Mikey Garcia, born in Oxnard, California is trained by his older brother and world class trainer Robert Garcia. Prior to leaving the Golden state the Garcia family hosted an open workout to fans from the community.
The workout was a family affair that featured father Eduardo Garcia, who trained world champion Fernando Vargas and his other son Robert Garcia.
Eduardo was sitting ringside chatting with family members while children were jumping in and out of the ring in the Garcia Boxing Gym operated by son Danny Garcia.
Danny Garcia, a trainer himself was greeting guests as they entered, shaking hands and helping onlookers get comfortable while they all waited for their local boxing heroes, Mikey and Robert Garcia.
Once Mikey and Robert arrived the energy in the room increased. The support from family transcends from the rich boxing history of the Garcia family to the hardworking Oxnard community and the global boxing fan base.
Mikey walked through the gym and briefly posed for pictures and shook hands with fans. After his workout Mikey took time to sign autographs with fans in attendance. While the attention was on Mikey who is set to take on his biggest challenge in Adrien Broner, it was his older brother former IBF world champion Robert who answered the questions regarding the preparations and predictions for the fight that will air live on Showtime.
“Broner is very strong physically and has really good power,” explained Robert, “we got to be prepared for a tough 12 rounds.” Robert knows Broner well, back in 2013 Marcos Maidana defeated Adrien Broner in a 12 round decision. This was the first time Broner was defeated. At that time the Ohio native was billed as the next Floyd Mayweather. Even though Maidana was victorious Robert Garcia said his fighter was hurt by power shots from Broner.
We don’t want excuses after the fight, we want to be able to say we beat the best Broner. -Robert Garcia
Going into the fight world champion Mikey Garcia will have the support of his community, the wealth of family boxing knowledge that has prepared him for his biggest challenge. How will we respond?
