Smalltalk confronted similar issues, as well. In those days, hardware was simply not fast enough. I laugh when I remember a 25 MHz 386 was considered a “workstation-class” processor.

Thankfully, today’s hardware is orders of magnitude faster and such issues are practically nonexistent.
