Ten ideas for better sleep and defeat insomnia

I just wanted to share some ideas for getting better sleep. Try them, see if they work. Some of these may sound mad, but they have worked for me, they may work for you too. Sometimes solutions are simple. If you have any ideas of your own add them:

  1. An obvious one I know, but for a long time I found it hard to sleep and then found it was just that I drank tea, coffee or coke too late in the day. Cut these drinks out and any other energy drinks or caffeine based drinks and see if it has any impact. Stop consuming these drinks as early as 5 pm or 6 pm and see if it has any effect on helping you sleep.
  2. Okay, you’ve tried to sleep and you’re still awake. Get up and remake the bed, leave the room and come back and see if it makes a difference.
  3. This has recently worked very well for me and my wife, It sounds insane and illogical. But we changed which end of the bed we sleep in. Heads where our feet used to be and vice versa. This can be a permanent change or one that you do part way through a night of little sleep. Why it works I don’t know, but it has for us and I have read other cases where it has made a difference.
  4. For those that sleep with someone else. Ditch the shared double quilt and revert to two single quilts so you have one each. It works well.
  5. Open the window. Close the door. Open the door. Close the window. What I am saying is experiment. Open doors and windows, and closed doors and windows can make a difference to how you sleep. Experiment with this and see what the result is.
  6. Are your curtains letting in too much light. Get them lined with blackout lining and reduce the light that streams into your bedroom.
  7. Earplugs from your chemist/pharmacist. Good for those who sleep with snorers.
  8. Leave your bedroom and go and sleep on your sofa. Sometime’s it’s easier to sleep on the sofa than the bed.
  9. Swap sides of the bed — if you sleep with someone.
  10. Phone on silent. Alarm set. No interruptions from messages and Facebook updates, and confidence the alarm will wake you.
