All the Men and Women Who Marched to Their Deaths at Chernobyl

It is the heroism of common people when faced with extraordinary circumstances that saves the world.

What is infuriating is that the disaster they fought, knowing they were going to die, was the result of overwhelming corruption and incompetence driven by aparatchiks grasping for political power and greed. Of course almost all large man made disasters can be laid at the feet of hubris, greed, and the desire for power — whether as here by a “state” agency or as coal disasters make clear “private” enterprise.
