Richard Monoson serves as a loan officer and broker for Grand Avenue Realty and Leasing in Sherman Oaks, California. In this role, he travels to clients’ homes for consultations and to help them find the most suitable loan program. When he is not working, Richard Monoson loves to stay in shape and is particularly fond of running.

While running provides a great cardio workout, the thought of it can be intimidating to those who do not do it. If you want to give running for exercise a shot, consider these three tips for new runners:

1. Go easy on yourself at first. For the first few weeks, you may not see the results you hope for, and you may find running really pushes you to your limits. Stick with it, and once you get over that initial hump, breathing will get easier and the movement will not leave you as sore.

2. Take shorter strides. While some new runners are tempted to take long strides during their runs, a long stride leaves your foot landing on the heel, which experts say is not ideal. Instead, take shorter strides and finish each step by landing on the middle of your foot.

3. Track your progress. Use a running app like MapMyRun or RunKeeper to easily track each run via GPS so you can keep an eye on your speed, route, and distance. As you get better, you will enjoy having concrete evidence and easily trackable data to show your improvement.
