Bail is supposed to be reasonable with the intent being that the people will not flee for fear of the loss of the bail. Often the bail amount corresponds to the amount you would have to pay in a fine for the charge, ensuring that the state collects it’s due if you run.

If you are poor and allowed out without bail because you have no money, what is the incentive to stay? Bail from a private company allows the state to have an outside agency pay for the cost of recapturing a fleeing person.
