But, getting beyond the much discussed bubble is difficult. I can’t think of five Trump supporters I could easily engage in discussion. However I’m going to try to find some and give Lessig’s suggestion a try. One reason for the bubble is that we do not hold our political attitudes in social isolation. Rather they are part of our social world and current technology has tended to make that social world more homogeneous. This homogeneity in turn creates social pressure to conform to the expectations of fellow bubblers.
An important implication of Lessig’s suggestion is that rather than simply decrying the bubble, we actually start taking steps toward piercing it. The overriding need to remove Trump from office actually can provide an impetus in this regard. It can help us move toward alliances with folks who are quite different but who agree with our assessment of Trump.
