Many discussions of economics are flawed by the tendency to overlook or assume context. Those that overlook social context, or assume a Marxist or secular context, see greed as the only motive of capitalism. Adam Smith, whose Wealth of Nations first articulated free enterprise, understood such to be only one of many aspects of society and economic behavior to be influenced by many factors besides greed. Like the engineering truism that “water always runs downhill,” which allows you to understand and build better roofs, so an understanding of economic behavior enables us to build a materially richer society.
