Fatalism is one way of looking at it. It is also an appeal to individualism. Individualism keeps things simple. Wanting to make the world a better place for everybody requires individuals to compromise on their personal wants and necessitates a complex conversation. Leadership inspires people to seek a common good. Demagoguery can only pander to simplistic pre-existing desires.
