Western culture teaches us that showing emotion — especially as a man — is a sign of weakness. For a man to cry at an emotional movie would be something to ridicule or shame.
As I get older, I have realized that being able to express our emotions freely is actually a huge strength, not sign of weakness. It’s about being human on the most basic level, and being able to connect with the world in a way that is uniquely human.
Being connected with our emotions and expressing them freely is not easy. It’s really hard to do around certain people in our lives; but being able to do so takes courage.
So we should celebrate those who express their emotions freely, be vulnerable and — even cry at a deeply touching movie. For they are connected, courageous, and human.
