I wanted to love Supernatural. I really did. I thought it would be great to find a quality fitness app for my VR headset to start working out again and avoiding the gym altogether. Cardio on my mountain biking is boring, and I’ve sworn off hiking since this happened, so I gave it a shot! Supernatural went beyond my expectations!

Like most of the Internet, I’m very good at leaving negative reviews when a company makes me really, really mad. But I write very few reviews, because quite frankly, I have other stuff to do, but that’s why this one is even more special.

My virtual reality journey began two years ago. I got my Oculus Quest 2 headset as a Christmas gift from one of my business contractors.. and not one that makes massive amounts of money. This person told me, “I really just want you to have this; I think you’ll love it.” Since then, it has remained one of the best Christmas gifts I’ve ever received.

I can’t describe how amazing VR was during my first time. My first reaction to the metaverse was, “When did all this happen?” as I played with the tutorial and then all the different games and apps.

(And if you haven’t heard already .. Supernatural is even better on the Meta Quest 3! Do you have yours yet?)

At the same time, everyone was suddenly getting VR headsets at my company. Now there are five of us that have them which is impressive. The recommendation to try Supernatural came from one of my colleagues, who usually gives pretty good tips. She gave me a free 1-month pass and I will provide you with one too!

When I first started VR, I was drawn to Beat Saber, because it reminded me of my favorite games Rockband and Guitar Hero. I always played the drums in Rockband, and even though I didn’t know half the music tracks, they were real music and I learned to love them.

The biggest problem with Beat Saber is the music. It fails on the fundamentals that if you’re going to have a game that relies almost entirely on music, it has to be good music. Beat Saber’s default tracks were created specifically for the game, and they suck. Despite paying for Beat Saber, I walked away because the music was trash.

Then I got the recommendation for Supernatural. I was in love from the moment I strapped on my headset and started the app.

They do a really great job of onboarding via the tutorial. It is super simple, and calibration is a breeze. I’ve had to change my squat and side lunge settings when I set them too low, and my booty was getting too low. [I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up!]

Like most people, I started with a low-intensity Flow workout. It is very similar to those Rockband and Guitar Hero games I used to play, and better than Beat Saber because all the music is popular famous tracks.

Low intensity is great for getting started, but I craved more immediately. Within a few days, I was blasting away, hitting targets at Medium intensity. It was so difficult; I couldn’t even imagine finishing a “Hard” workout at the time. I was exhausted after a workout, huffing and puffing for air, and the VR sweat was crazy. Even my wife would come off the game out of breath and in such need of a cool down, she would step outside in the middle of winter.

Now, I do a Hard intensity workout 4 days a week, crush it every time, and love it.

I’ve explored boxing workouts, and I didn’t love them, but I can see how they would be an excellent option for people into that. My next step (while I blast through every Hard intensity Flow workout they have) is to work on the meditation sessions.

But it’s not all just sweat and exotic virtual reality landscapes. All of the coaches are amazing, even though every interaction is pre-recorded. I pick my workouts based on music and don’t care which coach is hosting the session. But if we’re picking favorites, that’s Leanne Pedante because she is an inspirational badass, and wicked hot (hey, I have a type). Raneir is hilarious, Doc is a great motivator, Mark is a goof who will make you work hard, and Dwana will make you a better person.

But what happens when something goes wrong?

Rest assured, their support is outstanding. I know this because I’ve used it twice. Once, they sent me the incorrect product from their merchandise store. They replied within an hour, sent me a replacement, and just told me to keep the other item as a free gift. The second time I sent what I thought would be a complicated tech problem, I got a technical reply almost immediately within hours, and their solution worked perfectly. Bottom line — their support is fantastic.

Since starting with Supernatural, something else has happened. We have loved the app so much we have not just recommended it to others; we have paid forward that original gift that started it all. We have bought not one but two Oculus headsets as gifts for friends and family. They both love them and use them almost daily. We even purchased a Supernatural membership for a dear family member.

There are, however, a two minor problems.

First, if you’re into fitness tracking, Supernatural doesn’t support all fitness trackers. Notably, the Fitbit smart watches and fitness trackers are not supported at the time of this writing. I really hope they add them soon because as you know, I’m a die hard Fitbit fan and I have the cache of busted watches to prove it.

Second, as an app, it’s expensive. You pay monthly for Supernatural (like a gym membership), but since I use it almost every day, I don’t care about that. It’s totally worth it. I opted for the discounted annual membership (I think its around $15/month).
