Astronaut Frank Borman : He died in Billings, Montana, at the age of 95.

Frank Borman, whose full name is Frank Frederick Borman, was born on March 14, 1928, and died at the age of 95 (November 7, 2023). Frank Borman was a colonel in the United States Air Force (USAF), an astronaut for NASA, a test pilot, an aerospace engineer, and a successful businessman in the United States.

As the leader of Apollo 8, he and his crewmates Jim Lovell and William Anders made history by becoming the first humans to complete a full round of the Moon. For this achievement, he was given the Congressional Space Medal of Honour.

Who is Frank Borman

James Arthur Lovell Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 25 1928. He was the sole offspring of James Lovell Sr., a coal boiler salesman from Toronto who passed away in a vehicle accident in 1933, and Blanche née Masek, who had Czech ancestry.

During the initial two years following his father’s demise, Lovell and his mother resided with a family member in Terre Haute, Indiana. Subsequently, they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he attended Juneau High School.

During his childhood, Lovell actively participated in the Boy Scouts and ultimately attained the prestigious title of Eagle Scout, which is the highest achievement within the organisation.

Jim Lovell embarked on his professional journey by serving in the United States Navy as a naval aviator and test pilot. In 1962, he became a member of NASA as a part of the second cohort of astronauts required for the Gemini and Apollo initiatives.

Lovell participated in two Gemini missions, namely Gemini 7 (with Borman) in 1965 and Gemini 12 in 1966. He has the record for becoming the first individual to embark on four space flights. Lovell, one of the 24 individuals who have travelled to the Moon, holds the distinction of being the first person to make the journey twice.

Lovell has been honoured with multiple accolades for his contributions to the realm of space exploration, notably including the Congressional Space Medal of Honour and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Orbiting Moon

On a momentous Christmas Eve in 1968, Borman, accompanied by his crewmates James Lovell and William Anders, embarked on their mission from Cape Canaveral. They experienced a remarkable three-day journey in space, completing ten orbits around the Moon. During a live transmission on Christmas Eve, the astronauts delivered a sincere message from their spacecraft, reciting passages from the Book of Genesis.

Borman’s last remarks reverberate, “And on behalf of the crew of Apollo 8, we conclude with a pleasant evening, best wishes, a joyful Christmas, and may God bestow blessings upon all of you — all of you residing on the bountiful Earth.”
