New marketplaces

In researching new marketplaces created in the last few months, I found a:

  • Marketplace for selling designs, t-shirts
  • Marketplace for hiring construction equipment
  • Marketplace for buying & training Pokemons
  • Marketplace for people looking to get paid to endorse products
  • Marketplace for sewing supplies
  • Marketplace for retro goods
  • Marketplace for textbook sales and rentals
  • Marketplace for meals with your neighbours
  • Marketplace for Snapchat advertising
  • Marketplace for school tutors
  • Marketplace for photographers
  • Marketplace for renting kitchen appliances
  • Marketplace like Craiglist with classifieds, jobs, events
  • Marketplace for hiring campers
  • Marketplace for temporary lockers
  • Marketplace for expert trainers
  • Marketplace for used computer goods
  • Marketplace for renting podcast gear
  • Marketplace for refugee dinners
  • Marketplace for a music festival

Wow! Such a huge range of ideas ranging from interesting to promising.

Some of the key takeaways from reviewing these marketplaces are:

  • Adding an extension service to an existing community is a winner
  • Selling the idea of a marketplace to sellers can often come down to you being a cheaper & easier solution for their online store. Knowing that your competitors may be other software can help in some cases
  • Have a clear focus on how scattered your supply & demand side is when looking at marketplace ideas. Is your community going to take a long time to bring together or is your marketplace a natural extension of what the community already has in place
  • Is there even an existing community or place where people transact? Is your idea 10x better than what’s in place or does it solve real pain points like key features, payment protection, lower fees, simple updates etc

Which of the above marketplaces jumps out at you? Would you use any of them? Would you start your own? Let me know in the comments.
