North of 40 employees (or whatever the threshold may be) requires just as much internal calibration as external.

I think why some startups get stuck during the transition from Search to Build is that they’ve been constructed to be responsive to external stimuli (market, customers, investors) but not internal. Scaling the organization past this point requires actually dedicating resources to building a company and a culture. Up until this point, internal structures are almost always the by-product of external events (i.e. “Oh, we now have X number of customers, let’s hire a Customer Success manager”).

This is point where a COO, Chief of Staff or other designated role should shift inwardly to focus solely on internal development of the company.
