First we have to think clearly. We get that by removing creativity NOISE and innovation NOISE.

There are 3 primary sources of creativity noise — pretending things are creative for — -PROMOTION of persons in their careers, PROMOTION of products, i.e. “creative shampoos”, PROMOTION of this or that academic’s model of creativity as “best”. All these make 90+% of all publishing about creativity — -junk, absolutely worthless, feel creative, toys for little, very little minds.

Innovation noise is primarily packing every model of innovation with ordinary PROJECT MANAGEMENT stuff every 12 year old can generate if asked — multiple parallel streams, evaluations, choose likely winners, invest more in them, test, blah blah blah, pass the videogame please. If you SUBTRACT obvious project management from every journal article and book on innovation you get, leftover — — ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL. There ARE NO BOOKS currently written on innovation (approximately).

Well — now we have cleared the field and can SEE if there is anything REAL THERE to write about, do, publish.

ONE MORE PROVISO is in order here. There are cultures inside every one of us that distorts how and if we see the cultures outside us operating in others. These cultures operating unseen inside us distort creativity and innovation greatly, harmfully, indeed, they are the PRIMARY BLOCK to creating, inventing, designing, discovering, composing, performing, and all the others of the 30 CREATIVITY SCIENCES. Most of these harmful blocking cultures inside of us come from centuries old media and interfaces for mental work and others from equally old habits of colleges and professors. We have to undo to creativity and innovation what our own habits of media and interface do to them and what our entire educations and most aped/envies elite colleges and professors do to them. I list a few of these undoings:

  1. from single right-y models of the adolescent Harvard professor game — “my model is better than yours” — to repertoires of plural diverse, comprehensive, detailed, multi-level models that compensate for each others’ weaknesses — 60 models of creativity, 96 models of innovation, 320 approaches to design, 420 dynamics of Silicon Valley founders and of natural selection processes, and on and on.
  2. from prose to Fractal Page Forms as what we write, from scanning for points of interest to reading Geometries of Thought points constitute, from courses and work processes to mass workshop events based on comprehensive fractals, from meetings to Scientific Rules of Order, from brainstorms to Social Design Automata — and 13 others — there constitute MONASTIC INNOVATIONS — updates of ancient media and interfaces of thought making them as computational, biologic, evolutionary, and multi-cultural as our world.

There are many more but these suffice to point us to what “BEST CREATIVITY INNOVATION BOOKS” might be.

We have to start with PLURAL DIVERSE MODELS not single right-y worshiped models. We have to refound all of thought, its inputs, its model building, its output forms — on more computational, biologic, evolutionary, and multi-cultural bases — that means these four are traits of any creativity books and models, innovation books and models we might recommend.

THAT MEANS any ANY book on creativity or innovation not fully dealing with Santa Fe Institute non-linear system dynamics laid out in the 28 book Adison-Wesley (now Princeton Press) series, and not fully dealing with Japanese crowd (not web but social vehicles like circles) doing of inventing, designing, creating, composing, and so on — ANY books not dealing with such things is DISMISSED OUT OF HAND — as Western biased, linear stats biased, stuck in a century ago snob hierarchy with Harvard at the top (Amibile’s useless models changing 42 environment variables expensively and getting — trumpets please — from P&G sincere implementation — copying a Japanese product 8 years AFTER a hit in Japan. Harvard calls that “creativity”, Richard Tabor Greene calls that “delayed copying”.
