I quit my crazy-ass, abusive boss in 1996, and your article got my stomach churning. The differences between your experience and mine was that I worked directly for the CEO, and I DID ask all the right questions at the interview. Didn’t matter. Such was his level of mental illness that he could turn the charm off and on. And I’m not using the term “mental illness” lightly. I worked for a health care organization that employed MANY clinical therapists who were more than qualified to pass judgement on him, and did so. My favorite tactic that he employed was that he would come into the office on a Sunday, go into our offices, and throw out ANY file or document that was not put away. Then on Monday he would demand the paperwork and go crazy when it was not produced. I lasted three years, then quit after I was hospitalized for a week with chest pains, which turned out to be stress. Thank you for an excellent piece.
