Not much later, they stopped discharging sewage into Lake Michigan. In 1889, they reversed the flow of the Chicago River, and discharged ultimately into the Mississippi.

I think these kinds of projects are all behind us. The Congressional Budget Office calculates that if we go in the next 11 years as we have for the last 8 years, and interest rates return to normal, our entire federal revenue will go just to pay the interest on our debt and unfunded liabilities (Social Security, Medicare etc.). There will be nothing left to run the government, support a military, or meet the other federal obligations.

Let that sink in a minute. The next president will be the last president who presides over a functioning government.
