Perhaps, but I think you don’t fully acknowledge the depth of emotion driving the anti-Trump factions. It isn’t the law that has become untrustworthy, but those who administer it politically.
As to unheard of, until recently it was also unheard of for the directors of NSA, CIA and FBI to unite in secret to use the powers of their agencies and their troves of secret surveillance information to first try to eliminate one of the candidates for the presidency, and then, after that candidate won, to use those same assets to foment a soft coup.
At this stage, I do not think the details of the legal process present any deterrent at all to indicting Trump or people in Trump’s orbit for technical or even manufactured crimes.
