Simple solution: a flat tax with no deductions. Maybe for charity or a mortgage on the primary dwelling, but nothing else. Structure it to kick in above the poverty line if you wish.
The core problem isn’t that people can take advantage of the insanely convoluted tax code; the core problem is that the tax code is insanely convoluted.
It is that way because Congress designs it to reward the people who pay off the politicians in Congress. You’re problem, Hank, is that you are not one of them.
