Who’s Worse — Hitler or Stalin?
Sixty or seventy years ago, there were some people who, for political reasons, argued whether Hitler or Stalin were the greater evil. But most Americans said “Who cares? They’re both evil”.
In the same way, there are some who, for political purposes, argue today that AntiFa/BLM are less evil than the KKK/Nazis. But most Americans I think are fed up with the violence from both sides, and say “Who cares? They are both evil”.
This illustrates, if it doesn’t fully explain, the disconnect between the Media and the #NeverTrumpers one one hand, and average Americans on the other. For two years we have witnessed AntiFa riots on campuses and in the streets, cracked skulls at Trump rallies, neighborhoods looted and burned by BLM, police executed. Any nuance of difference between those violent Anarchists and the KKK/Nazis seems of little practical importance. Nazis and KKK have been marching for decades with barely a headline on page 25. It wasn’t until the AntiFa began violently confronting them that the KKK/Nazis got the notoriety on page 1 that they so desired.
The Anarchists and the Nazis together bring violence to otherwise legitimate marches and demonstrations and rallies by ordinary Americans, by the “fine people” Trump agrees are on both sides. The Media and the Left try to justify the violence by arguing that the aims of the underlying march or demonstration itself justifies a violent response. A rally to support Trump? Obviously, Trump must be opposed, therefore violence is justified. Preserve Confederate statues? Anything goes. Defend the police? Break out the sniper rifles. Rally to support statues? Get the clubs.
The Right has never defended the KKK or the Nazis. The Left does defend AntiFa and BLM. The Left is beside itself that Trump didn’t declare that their Anarchists are less evil than the Nazis. It’s time for Democrats and Liberals to come to terms with this plain fact that ordinary Americans know instinctively — violent extremes on the Left and the Right are two sides of the same evil coin.
It’s past time for the Left to stop trying to convince us that their violent groups are somehow better because they crack only the skulls that the Left says deserve to be cracked. Just good people driven by oppression and desperation into a regrettable but understandable resort to violence, so their narrative goes. Sorry, no. Anarchists versus Nazis; who cares? They are both evil.
