In 2019, Tesla rolled out the Beta version of its new Safety Score feature. This system rates drivers on their safety while behind the wheel of a Tesla car. In this blog post, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the Tesla Safety Score system, including how it works and how it may help you improve your driving. We’ll also touch on how the Safety Score and Tesla Insurance work together.

How the Tesla Safety Score Works

The Tesla Safety Score system uses data collected by the car’s sensors to rate drivers on their safety performance. This data includes information on driving habits such as speed, acceleration, braking, and cornering. The Safety Score is displayed as a number with 100 being the highest possible score.

To view your Safety Score, simply log into your Tesla account and navigate to the ‘Safety’ tab or use the smartphone application. Here, you’ll see your current score as well as a history of your previous scores. You can also view detailed information on individual trips, including a map of your route and data on how safely you drove.

How the Tesla Safety Score May Help You Improve Your Driving

The great thing about the Safety Score is that it provides you with feedback on your driving habits. This feedback can be extremely useful in helping you identify areas where you need to make improvements.

For example, let’s say that you frequently brake hard or accelerate quickly. Although these actions may not necessarily be unsafe, they can be indicative of poor driving habits. By becoming aware of these habits, you can make a conscious effort to change them and improve your overall safety rating.

How the Tesla Safety Score Affects Tesla Insurance Rates

Your Safety Score also plays a role in determining your monthly Tesla insurance rates. This is because safe drivers are less likely to make claims than unsafe drivers. As such, Tesla offers discounts for drivers with high Safety Scores. As the Safety Score is computed on a trip-by-trip basis over a sliding 30-day window. Because of this, you always have some control of what your upcoming premium payments will be. The poorer the driving behavior, the higher the upcoming premium. But take heart, redemption is attainable, and a better Safety Score will be rewarded in short order.

Realizing that you have control, and the reward (or punishment) is evaluated and factored in fresh each month is a game changer. Other insurance companies have been trying to get insight into drivers’ behaviors for years through their telematics programs (ie ‘snapshot’ by Progressive, the Root App for smartphones, ‘RightTrack’ by Liberty Mutual just to name a few). The problem, though, is premiums are fixed in advance for a given period whether you consciously try to improve your habits or not. Also, those systems are usually not transparent to the driver, so you don’t easily recognize your areas of weakness.

To get started with Tesla Insurance, simply log into your account, and navigate to the ‘Insurance’ tab. Here, you’ll be able to get a quote based on your current Safety Score.

In conclusion, the Tesla Safety Score is a great way to get insight into your driving habits and improve your safety behind the wheel. Not only that but maintaining a high Safety Score can also lead to savings on your monthly insurance rates. Why not log into your account today and see how you’re doing? Who knows, you might just end up saving yourself some money in the process!
